The Small Business Owner & Overnight Success
-
The Internet and cable television make it easy for entrepreneurs and small business owners to find case studies of others who seem to have grown successful overnight. Although it’s no longer in production, Donny Deutsch had a show about entrepreneurs called, “The Big Idea.” On this show we watched story after story of people who found success and whom we could learn from. I, along with many entrepreneurs I often spoke with, was enamored with the show because it gave me hope that I will also find great success. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that you can always find big success if you’re not afraid to work at it but it rarely appears overnight.
This was again illustrated by Chris Brogan and Pam Slim, two brilliant entrepreneurs who, if they haven’t already, are well on their way towards finding success. Here are their thoughts on the myth that is overnight success and how hard you truly must work to find success.

My take is to never forget the passion you have in building your business. We all became entrepreneurs for a reason. Sure, the riches at the end of the rainbow drive many of us, but there’s always a larger purpose that drove our decision to do what it is we do. If you never lose focus of that passion, combined with a willingness to constantly learn from your mistakes, you will have a better chance of reaching your goal.
What is your reality of finding entrepreneurial success?

If you want to start a company, pick something you love, because the odds of making billions and retiring to your own private island are slim. But the odds of making several million aren’t nearly as bad (see Millionaire Next Door), but you’ll likely end up married to this company, so pick something you really care about and will love doing.

I think the Internet and cable television give a lot of would-be entrepreneurs visions of making millions without having to put in lots of hard work.

“It only took 5 years for me to become an overnight success.”
I remember hearing the quote when I decided to go into business for myself. It was an eye-opener!

Joe, thanks for the input. For many people it will take even longer. But that’s ok because we do what we do because we love it; not because it’s a lottery ticket.
