#smbiz Chat Recap - Website Traffic
-
Following is the #smbiz Twitter chat recap on the topic of driving more traffic to your small business Web site. Special guests for the chat were @jkjaffe and @30lines.@smbiz Q1 What are some myths about what it takes to get good traffic to your small business Web site? #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q1 that you can do it with a site with almost no content through #SEO #smbiz
@jkjaffe 2 get quality traffic with #seo you need content that is on point #smbiz
@30lines Q1: Myth - there’s an easy way to get *quality* traffic fast. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q1 no. 1 mistake small business owners make when adding text 2 their sites is not doing the research #smbiz
@kmskala Q1: that you need a big fancy site and need to spend lots of $$ to create it. However, in the end, it’s about the content not flash #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q1 go to the home pages of #Google and #Bing and #yahoo and see what ur customers search 4 #smbiz
@merylevans Q1 A site notorious for being ugly as heck is raking it in. Proof = design doesn’t matter when you have what people want. #smbiz
@30lines @smbiz Myth - All I need are LOTS and LOTS of ‘eyeballs.’ #smbiz
@smbiz Q2 What are some popular things people do WRONG when trying to drive traffic to a Web site? #smbiz
@30lines @smbiz Q2: SPAM. (Or at least stuff that looks and smells like spam.) #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q2 they spend a lot of money on PPC - I had 1 client who spent 100K in 1 month 4 nothing #smbiz
@PodWorx #smbiz Q2: Thinking Flash video is the answer.
@jkjaffegood SEO is readable content RT @wvpmc: Q1 myth: that SEO is more important than good, readable, customer-engaging content #smbiz
@PRtini Q2: Companies “spam” social networks with links to their site, instead of actualyl engaging ppl. #smbiz
@30lines @smbiz Q2: Have a message that resonates w/ your audience, rather than what *you* want to hear. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q2 try 2 get lots of followers on Twitter by paying 4 them lol think MJ #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q2 email campaigns to new lists are popular, but don’t get results #smbiz
@smbiz Q3 What is the role search engines play in driving traffic and how does that work? #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q3 search engines can drive both good and bad traffic - u don’t want academics on ur site if u nd customers #smbiz
@WayneLiew Q3 Search engines send laser targeted traffic if you target buying keywords on your site. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q3 search engines match consumer with vendor - u nd 2 find ur niche even more so today #smbiz
@30lines @smbiz Search has transformed how consumers shop. Having a strong online presence opens you up to a new audience. #smbiz
@PodWorx #smbiz Q3: Search engine role is huge. Image if Google shut down tomorrow. Many would panic.
@jkjaffe Q3 Google vs Bing vs Yahoo - the winner is who gives the best results for a search #smbiz
@Chadroll thoughts on convesion rates - organic vs PPC - like long tailed keywords vs highly targeted inexpensive PPC like mfg part #’s. #smbiz
@30lines Q3: Search queries are getting longer (4-5+ words) - people are learning how to get what they want from search engines. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q3 because Google gives the best matches, that’s why 65% of all searches are done on it #smbiz
@smbiz Q4 Without getting too technical, what are the best ways to get good rankings in the search engines? #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q4 best search engine tip is a good Title - most important tag #smbiz
@merylevans By the time you have Google or any other engine figured out, they change the formula. Provide fresh/valuable content, cant go wrong. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q4 Title, H1, first P tags, the URL, meta tags, all have to have your keywords #smbiz
@PodWorx #smbiz Q4: On page: Titles, H1, keyword density. Off page: Anchor text
@30lines @smbiz Q4: Be interesting enough that other people want to talk about you. (Getting external links through online WOM.) #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q4 Absolutely DONT try to target more than 1 page on your site for a given set of keywords #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q4 I don’t believe as much in keyword density #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q4 a well written page that is on topic will rank better for that topic, make it a narrow topic #smbiz
@wvpmc great post on markup’s impact on SEO, accessibility by @hacool Making sense of semantic HTML http://www.cli.gs/Rzb7Wh #smbiz
@30lines Q4: Are you blogging? You get some of the best traffic when you’re talking about stuff that matters, not focusing on keywords. #smbiz
@WayneLiew Q4 I’ll add link building to the on-page elements mentioned by @jkjaffe. #smbiz
@jkjaffe @mmangen kw density follows naturally if your page is on topic - search engines are getting ai good enough 2 tell #smbiz
@PRtini Q4: Assuming the design & programming is technically correct, smart integration of keywords & relevant, fresh content will help SEO #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q4 what is often ignored is the links u place on ur home page - very important #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q4 also, find your niche - don’t try to dominate a keyword phrase that’s under 4 words #smbiz
@smbiz Q5 Can U explain meta, keyword & title tags, how they work, and how to use them to drive traffic? #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q5 metakeyword and meta description tags are just 4 discipline these days - all search engines ignore them #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q5 use meta keyword to make sure you have only one keyword phrase per page #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q5 for example, if ur a plastic surgeon u nd separate pgs 4 “plastic surgeon” “plastic surgery” “plastic surgeon NY” #smbiz
@30lines Q5: Agree w/ @jkjaffe. Meta data isn’t as relevant as it used to be. I would much rather work on getting valuable inbound links. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q5 sometimes search engines will display metadesc in the results - but that means ur page has no content #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q5 I believe Google will rank u higher if u don’t put ur compny name first in the title tag #smbiz
@30lines Q5: Choose a content mgmt system (CMS) that lets you easily customize site data like meta tags, keywords, etc. #smbiz
@PodWorx @jkjaffe: Q5 Google doesn’t ignore meta description. Displays that content in search results. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q5 “See amazing plastic surgery transformations” will get more clicks than “Your Plastic Surgery” as a title #smbiz
@smbiz Q6 How do you leverage Web content the right way when trying to drive traffic to your site? #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q6 I’ll start w/ a warning - b careful and don’t copy from other sites!!! esp Wikipedia though tempting #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q6 try 2 get ur visitors 2 create relevant content #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q6 if u can get ur visitors 2 post their questions, that helps u get content good 4 #google #smbiz
@30lines @smbiz Q6: Leave relevant comments on other blogs in your industry. Join the conversations that are already happening. #smbiz
@WayneLiew Q6 Content can be used over and over again via different formats, videos, text, audios, presentations, etc. #smbiz
@jkjaffe @WayneLiew Q6 unfortunately unless you tag the videos and images, they are all but invisible #smbiz
@BizCoachDeb A useful link for claiming your social media profiles across many sites; http://knowem.com/ #smbiz
@PRtini Q6 Don’t just write content for search engine algorithms.Remember to write for readers.Give ‘em a reason to come back &share content #smbiz
@smbiz Q7 Talk about inbound/outbound linking. We know it’s important but what do U look 4 and which sites R good for linking? #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q7 inbound is much more important than outbound, but #google will also hurt ur rank if u dont link out - bad netzien #smbiz
@PodWorx #smbiz Q7: re inbound, I look 4 PageRank, # of outbound links, and relevancy.
@jkjaffe Q7 don’t get reciprocal links - those only hurt u #smbiz
@30lines @jkjaffe Works the other way, too. What’s good for readers often ends up being good for search engines. #smbiz
@PRtini @jkjaffe In principle, yes. But ppl get so hung up on SEO stuff, they forget what they’re really doing. Agree, being natural is best! #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q7 look 4 sites in your industry that can link 2 specific pages matching the topic #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q7 links count ONLY if link, page of link, and page that is linked to all have same keyword phrase #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q7 a year or two ago #google got smart and figured out sites like washingtonpost.com were selling links #smbiz
@30lines Q7: Give first. Blog about your customers, your industry, your neighborhood, then link out to their sites in your posts. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q7 I though still like newspapers 4 roadblock links because they have so many words u get matches through luck #smbiz
@smbiz Q8 If a #smbiz is doing everything right with tags and content, and they’re still not getting traffic, what’s the deal?
@jkjaffe Q8 they are not matching their clients…don’t miss ur market! #smbiz
@30lines @smbiz Q8: Check the technical stuff first. Are your pages set to ‘noindex’ for some reason? Fix that. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q8 I hv clients who rank 1, 2, 3 4keywords &tell me they r perplxd-smple answer-their clients dont search 4those words #smbiz
@MediaCollective Q8 while all is correct on site to get results you have to go off page and build inbound links, team w/complementary biz, & pub site #smbiz
@smbiz Q9 Can you provide some secrets to getting good traffic? Give us some tips we wouldn’t have already read elsewhere? #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9 Most important #seo #tip - ONE keyword phrase per page - cannot say that enough #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9 if it’s raining outside & u wnt2 drink - don’t go out there w/ a spoon! - ur site needs at least 100pgs 2 rnk #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9 study quantcast.com and compete.com to know ur market and competition #smbiz
@30lines @smbiz Q9: It’s not all about traffic to your SITE, it’s about getting your message in front of your audience on their turf. #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9 twitter is great 4 building traffic - make sure to adv ur site, not just u #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9 simple secret: put your web site address on all physical communications, in ur email footer, on ur letterhead #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9 google insight is a great tool for looking at history of a phrase #smbiz
@30lines Q9: Become a resource (like @SternalPR and @smbiz) … make people want to come to you. #smbiz
@smbiz Q9.5 What is Google Caffeine and how will it help/hurt small business trying to drive website traffic? #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9.5 Google Caffeine is next gen Google algorithms, but the truth is it won’t hurt the guys who’s following our conversation #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9.5 Google Caffeine will hurt those sites ranking for under 4 keywords by placing brands up front #smbiz
@jkjaffe Q9.5 Google wouldn’t have done this if they didn’t feel that’s the right thing for search #smbiz
@30lines Q9.5 Google is evolving and improving its search engine w/ Caffiene … here’s one early review: http://bit.ly/soit7 #smbiz

Thanks for the long and detailed tips.
Seems like SEO is all about what the big boss(Google) wants.
No one cares about yahoo and bing.

Sure is what it seems, right? Google continues to be the dominant player in the space. Until that changes I recommend developing an SEO strategy around what works for them.
