The survey also revealed that many retailers think online businesses are in a better position to withstand the bleak economic conditions compared to brick-and-mortar stores. Many online businesses are also utilizing more social marketing resources such as Twitter and Facebook since there is a greater opportunity to reach even more people online. Forrester Research, as reported in many news Web sites, forecast in January that online sales in the U.S. will jump 11 percent to $156.1 billion in 2009. The research organization says growth in years beyond should mirror 2009 figures. This information will most likely fuel the email engine and prompt companies to beef up their online marketing efforts.

Many retailers love the options presented by email marketing, including it’s ability to be very cost effective, as well as its ability to provide for optimum targeting to reach specific niche demographics. Although email marketing will continue to grow, most people will avoid having their inboxes bombarded with “junk mail” since retailers know they have to be very targeted with their outreach.
