Using Video In Your Marketing

by John Sternal on May 3, 2009

video_cameraMost small businesses think of marketing as emails, direct mail, incentive programs, advertising, etc. And don’t get me wrong, they’re all very effective forms of marketing. But if you’re a small business looking to do some really exciting marketing, what are you doing with video?

We live in a YouTube world today, which means you can’t ignore the power of video. Popular products like the Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder make it super easy for any small business person to shoot video and utilize in marketing campaigns.

Here are some great tips when using video in your marketing:

1. Keep the video short. People don’t have long attention spans anymore, so don’t use a video that is too long.

2. Make sure you include your URL in the video as you want to drive people to your Web site while they watch or when they’re done watching. Use it as a way to drive traffic.

3. Use lots of branding in your videos, including logos of your company and/or products. People need to visually identify with your company.

4. Instructional videos are a great way to explain one of your products or services. Many people learn when they watch something rather than read something. So use the power of video to reach these people.

5. Make it viral. People love some videos so much that they get circulated over the Internet millions of times over. If your video uses humor or demonstrates something so unbelievably wild, people will email it to their friends - all over the world.

6. Sometimes the best videos aren’t yours at all. Design a place on your Web site where customers can create and upload their own videos. Empowering your raving fans can be very powerful.

7. If your company is participating in an event or trade show, take video snippets that capture moments of the event and put it on your Web site. This will make your visitors feel like they are participating at the event with you.

Remember, though, that quality counts here. It’s important to have videos that look as professional as possible. Here’s a resource to help you develop great videos: How to Make Your Own Video

What a great blog. I’ll return here often. This is an alternative to the Flip camera that I just purchased the other day:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Webbie-MHS-PM1-Camcorder-Orange/dp/B001QWGF3W/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1241693007&sr=1-4

I have my first videos up on YouTube.com (search for “carceronvideo”).

Thanks for the great information!
