Finding newsworthy topics hidden inside the walls of your company really isn’t as hard as you think. Once you realize how to see the world through the eyes of a PR person, you’ll constantly be coming up with story ideas that are attractive to all kinds of media.
First, take a look at your company and ask the simple question, “What is new?”, or “What is going on?” The easiest way to come up with news is to talk about what is new about your company. Maybe you’re coming out with a new product. Or perhaps you’re introducing a new version to an existing product.
But even if nothing is new, you’re most likely still sitting on a mountain of stories. Open up the newspaper and find out what the news media is talking about. Is the economy really good or really bad? Is there a Presidential election? Has a natural disaster just affected some part of the country or world? When you know what the conversation is, you can then ask the question, “How does my company fit into what is being talked about?” And when you answer this question, you will have lots of stories that get your company involved in the media conversation. Then, all you have to do is call the newspaper and tell the reporter you can help them do a story on a particular topic.
