What If I Have A Strong Opinion On Something?

by John Sternal on November 4, 2008

Maybe you live in a community where some kind of political or social issue is dividing the people. Or maybe an issue affecting you takes place on a national stage. Either way, if you have an opinion on something that has been in the news, you have every right to use some PR skills to write about it and submit your opinion piece to the newspaper.

The two main methods of getting your opinion across are through either a letter to the editor, or a larger opinion column. Each newspaper, whether it’s the local version, or a paper as big as The New York Times, has an editorial and opinion page usually found towards the end of the “A” section. Here you will find editorials (which are the opinions of the newspaper) letters to the editor (short opinions by a number of readers), or opinion pieces (which are longer and more in-depth opinions from readers and business or government leaders).

Whatever your opinion is, you have the right to voice it through a letter to the editor, or by asking the newspaper’s editorial team if you can write an opinion column. It’s a great way to express how you feel about something. Lots of businesses use the opportunity to talk about how a pending legislative bill will affect them, or to defend a series of media reports that have inaccurately portrayed your company. The opinion piece lets you “get the record straight” by speaking directly to the readers.
